Inspired by the Indonesian custom of placing a small elaborate house—a spirit house—on a pedestal in the corner of one’s property, this House of Spirits Riverbox created by artist Mark Soppeland sits on the corner of the property of the arts council in my town near the Scioto River.
Spirit houses are said to provide shelter for spirits that could cause problems if not appeased, and offerings were customarily left at the house to soothe the spirits.
In my experience, writing out my negativity—my gripes, my frustrations—helps cast away the darkness, enabling me to shine my light more brightly. Like spirit houses, writing seems to soothe the darkness.
Sunday Journal Prompt
